Holiday with Birman cat, cat pension, cat sitter

Summer is here! A topical question is what to do with our cat while we are on holiday? What is the best solution for our cat?

  • Can our Burmese Holy Temple cat travel with us?
  • Should we take him to a cat boarding facility?
  • Or should we call a cat sitter?

The cats of the Saba / Sabacat Birman kennel have been competing since the foundation of our kennel, both at home and abroad. And that involves a lot of travelling. We travelled by plane, train and overnight train, and by car. We have stayed in countless hotels around the world. I can safely say that you can travel with the Birman cat, even on holiday.

Some things to look out for when travelling with your cat:

1, It’s a good idea to prepare your kitten for unusual situations before you go. With immune boosting vitamins and pro biotics.

2, Make sure the accommodation accepts pets and if so, under what conditions. This is how we book accommodation.

3, If you change accommodation frequently and have a long journey between them, don’t take the cats with you. it would probably be more stress than pleasure.

4, If you are staying in a hostel where there is daily cleaning, it is important to indicate at the reception and on the door that you do NOT want cleaning. They usually vacuum with the door open, which can scare the cat into running away!

5, Always take enough of the food you are used to, as you may not be able to get it and a change of food can upset the overall digestion.

6. If travelling abroad, rabies vaccination is required and +21 days waiting time, passport, chip and clinical veterinary examination before travelling. Each country has its own protocol for receiving pets. It is worth checking with your official veterinarian.

What is the best solution for our cat if we decide that she is not travelling with us?

  • The best solution is to keep the cat in your home and ask a trusted family member, friend or even a neighbour to look after it. It is important to describe precisely his diet, his needs, his habitual actions and his hygiene history. This makes the carer’s job much easier.
  • If you don’t know anyone who does, you can turn to the reliable cat sitters already doing well in the big cities. They essentially take care of your cat professionally in your own home as described above.
  • if necessary, it may be a solution to move the Birman cat to a friend or family member for the duration of the trip. If we decide to do this, it’s good to always take it to the same place. Avoid having another cat or indoor dog if possible, to avoid the stress of getting used to the new dog. It’s quite another to get two animals to live together for a week than for a week’s holiday!
  • I have left it for last because I do not recommend using the cat versions.

To sum up, my professional opinion is that you can plan a trip with a Birman cat. If you leave your cat at home, it is best to do this in your own home.
