When someone wants two cats, almost the same question always comes up:
should it be two males, two females, or a male and a female together?
Our short answer, based on more than a decade of breeding experience:
all three pairings can work beautifully.
The real question isn’t primarily about gender.
But rather, what two personalities are being placed side by side.
What matters more than gender?
For neutered family cats, in everyday life together, far more important may be:
- temperament;
- energy level;
- age;
- early socialization;
- and how the particular cat connects with other living beings.

Two Birmans are often a natural pair
The Birman, also known as the Sacred Cat of Burma, is a deeply bonded, social breed.
Two kittens growing up together play with each other, rest together, learn from each other, and can provide companionship for one another even when the family isn’t home.
That’s why many families choose two kittens from the start.
Others return for a second a few months or years after their first Saba Birman.
We see many beautiful examples of both.
One or two Sacred Birman kittens?
Two males, two females, or a mixed pair?
Among Saba families, there are examples of all three combinations living together harmoniously in the long term.
There are pairs of two females.
And of course male–female pairs as well.
The common thread isn’t their gender.
But rather that their personalities and lifestyles suit each other.

What if there’s already another cat at home?
A well-socialized Birman can live harmoniously not only with other Birman cats.
Saba kittens live together with Maine Coons, Ragdolls, and British Shorthairs, among others.
So if someone is originally considering a Maine Coon, Ragdoll, or British cat as a second kitten, a Birman can also be a very interesting choice.

However, the individual is always more important than the breed.
What’s most important when choosing two kittens?
It’s not about putting two “right genders” side by side.
But rather two personalities who have a good chance of living together joyfully.
That’s why when selecting kittens with us, we don’t just look at which is male and which is female.
We observe:
who plays with whom, who seeks out whom, what their energy levels are like, how they connect with people and with each other.
Because two well-matched kittens aren’t simply twice as many cats.
But rather an entirely different kind of shared story.
